The Knatchbull line from the 1500s and back to the 1300s is well published as it is
connected to Jane Austen and the Mountbattens of Broadlands,Romsey.
See Harleian Society :Visitation of Kent 1619
Particular interests:
On the assumption that James Neasby Nutteing took his mother's
maiden name i would be interested to learn from anyone aware of this name Neasby or Measby,
so far i have found reference to only in Kent.
Note : KNATCHBULL in 1851 census (Hampshire) is mistranscribed as KNOTCHLER.
Some Poitevin references from the registers of the Walloon Church,Southampton
but including these Guernsey entries
Marie Poitevin in Jersey or Guernsey 5 July 1629
Nicolas Poitevin de Guernsey in 1567 or 1568 and death au matin of 27 Dec 1594
It would be of academic importance to link John Skelton of Reigate
in the above listing to the Tudor poet laureate ,approx 1460 to 1529
of the same name.
H.L.R Edwards of the 1930s and 1940s made a
valiant effort ,see his:-
Skelton:The Life and Times of an Early Tudor Poet
Review of Englih Studies,Vol Xi,1935-John Skelton:A Genealogical Study.
There is plenty of circumstantial evidence.
1/ The poet's setting of The Tunnying of Elynor Rummyng was
in either "le George" or the "Running Horse" pub in Leatherhead ,6 miles
from Reigate,Elinour Rumming was a real but libelled personage recorded in 1525
as having been fined 2d at the Pachensham manor court for selling ale at excessive prices.
2/ Robert Skelton of Reigate ,in above list, was with the royal household as was the poet
70 years earlier.
3/ Many other royal household Skelton references in the Tudor records
4/ The poet had as sponsor the Duke of Norfolk with estates in Surrey and general Skelton
connections with the Howard family household.
5/ Ambrose Skilton (sic) with royal patronage (died 1533)had an interest in Bletchingley/Tandridge
just outside Reigate ,Surrey.
6.There is a near contemporaneous ( above ) picture of the poet [STC 22615,sig. D7] in 1545
referring to "Skylton poyet" in the frontispiece of
Why Come Ye to Courte
Any English scholars /academics aware of any other occurances of the Skilton/ Skylton variant of the
poet's name I would be interested in hearing about. 2009 I see he emerged ,
via researcher Paul Campbell, that poet John Skilton was a primary
source for stating that the game of cricket ( crekettes ) came over
with Flemish weavers and not native English origin.
Skilton is very much a Surrey name ,about 70 per cent of all Skilton births
recorded in the IGI are in Surrey only one of 40 English counties.
There are 1102 records on the 1901 census concerning people surname SKILTON
even by this date about 420 of those people were born in Surrey and of those 420
about 350 were in Surrey when the census was conducted March 1901.
I have copies of wills for John Skelton of Southwark dated 1471
,will of Israel Skilton dated 1647 and the wills of Ambrose Skilton dated 1533 and his wife
Elizabeth dated 1551.see file ......./gen3.htm
Also what was the origin of the Skilton surname variant ? Often people
registered in the records as Skelton signed their name unmistakingly as
Skilton ,I suspect a mid-Surrey dialect influence.
A fascinating Skilton record is a marriage record for Holmwood Church,Surrey.
Marriage on Christmas day 1847 of Jonathan Skilton of Holmwood father Thomas
Skilton ,labourer married Charlotte Skilton of Holmwood father Thomas Skilton
,labourer. All witnessed by 2 independent witnesses.
For anyone related to a female line back maybe to Margaret Sullivan, born about 1836,Kerry Ireland
or maybe Louisa Jane Penn,b 1873,m 1895,Croydon Surrey there is a benign genetic trait affecting
all females, medically called partial or mild bilateral cutaneous syndactyly between the second and third toes (partial sock-foot, web-foot ) ; only medical reference I've seen is in connection with someone with
Filippi Syndrome -J . Med. Genet. 1995,32, p659-661.

Hint for decoding some of the returned results on the 1901 census online.
Go into source code and the hex number string after "person&key=" and the final sets of numbers
that match , except for last number or two , relate to the same census record. The final digit or two varying with the position in that
record , ie from"Head" down to youngest roughly. Anyone know how to translate any of the other numbers
to folio & page number ?
Anyone using Firefox browser and http://www.historicaldirectories.org/
where the "frame advance" by number facility is corrupted go to the URL
