It
would be of academic importance to link John Skelton of Reigate to the Tudor
poet laureate ,approx 1460 to 1529 of the same name.H.L.R Edwards of the 1930s
and 1940s made a valiant effort ,see his:-
Skelton:The Life and Times of an
Early Tudor Poet
Review of Englih Studies,Vol Xi,1935-John Skelton:A
Genealogical Study.
There is plenty of circumstantial evidence.
1 The
poets setting of The Tunnying of Elynor Rummyng was in either "le George" or the
"Running Horse" pub in Leatherhead ,3 miles from Reigate,Elinour Rumming was a
real but libelled personage recorded in 1525 as having been fined 2d at the
Pachensham manor court for selling ale at excessive prices.
2 Robert Skelton
of Reigate ,in above list, was with the royal household as was the poet 70 years
earlier.
3 Many other royal household Skelton references in the Tudor
records
4 The poet had as sponsor the Duke of Norfolk with estates in Surrey
and general Skelton connections with the Howard family household.
5 Ambrose
Skilton [sic] with royal patronage (died 1533)had an interest in Bletchingley
/Tandridge just outside Reigate ,Surrey.
6.There is a near
contemporaneous reference [STC 22615,sig. D7] in 1545 to "Skylton poyet" in the
frontispiece of Why Come Ye to Courte
Any English scholars /academics aware
of any other occurances of the Skilton variant of the poet's name I would be
interested in hearing about.
Also what was the origin of the Skilton
surname variant often people registered in the records as Skelton signed their
name unmistakingly as Skilton. Skilton is very much a Surrey name ,about 70 per
cent of all Skilton births recorded in the IGI are in Surrey only one of 40
English counties.

Latin Abbreviations
1/ Suspension
One of the simplest and earliest forms of abbreviation in which a single letter represents a word. eg. C.
Julius Caesar = Caius Julius Caesar; T. = Teste or Testibus; W. = Walterus , Willelmis etc.
The correct word and its grammatical case are deduced from the historical and grammatical context.
Suspension is also the form of abbreviation in which the final letters of the word are onitted. eg. dat. = datum or data
2/ Abbreviations omitting 'm' or 'n'
In medieval and early modern script, it is very hard to distinguish minims , u,v,i,j,m and n, especially in book hand. Thus one of the most common abbreviations involves the omission of m or n. The abbreviation sign will be written above the vowel preceding the omitted letter/s.
Taking form of a tilde or horizontal 's'
oes (tilde over es ) = omnes
hoies (tilde over oi) = homines
dederut ( tilde over u ) = dederunt
cu ( tilde over u ) = cum
3/ Contraction omission of middle letters
Abbreviation tilde like symbol over letters
eg
ht (tilde over ht ) = habet
hndi (tilde over nd ) = habendi
here (tilde over er) = habere
epc (tilde over ep ) or eps (tilde over ps) = episcopus
xps (tilde over xp ) = Christus
ample chance of confusion
ds (tilde over ds ) = deus , dns (tilde over ns ) = dominus
4/ Superscripts
These letters , usually vowels , denote the omission of certain letters before vowels.
eg a) the 'u' between the letter 'q' and a vowel (for upper case letters read superscript lower case );
qAm = quam
qIete = quiete
b) an 'r' or an ' l ' before a vowel ;
pIma = prima
aLqO = aliquo
other variants
c over n = nec , o over v = vero , i over g = igitur , i over m = mihi , i over s = sibi , i over u = ubi
5/ Abbreviation for 'er' and 're'
Although this abbreviation ( mirrored s or vertical tilde over single letters ) can be used to express many contractions , it is most frequently used in contractions of 're' and ' er', occasionally it represents 'ir' or 'ri'.
eg tre (mark over r ) = terre
monastio (mark over i ) = monasterio
fuint ( mark over i ) = fuerint
6/ Abbreviation for 'us' or 'os'
Superscript like a number 2
eg teneam2 = teneamur , dicit2 = dicitur
7/ Abbreviation for 'us' and 'os'
Superscript resembling number 9
eg ei9 = eius , p9t = post , op9 = opus , illi9 = illius
8/ Abbreviation for 'con'
Resembles previous but placed on the line
eg 9tra = contra , 9firmavi = confrmavi
9/ Abbreviation for 'et ' , 'ue' or 'us'
Resembles a semicolon or number 3. It replaces the final 'us' in datives and ablaties ending in 'bus' , and it also stands for the final 'us' in words ending in 'que'. It also has the meaning of 'et' in some words.
eg omnib3 = omnibus , heredib3 = heredibus , itaq9 = itaque , quoq3 = quoque , v3 = videlicet , s3 = scilicet , p3 = patet , s3 = sed
10/ Abbreviations for 'per' , 'pre' and 'pro'
horizontal bar through 'p' descender , superscript 's' or 9 after the 'p' or ring on the 'p' descender
eg p (barred) = per or occaionally = par
p (superscript 's' ) = pre
p (circled descender ) = pro
imppm ( single or double barred ) = imperpetuum
psentes ( superscript's' between pand s ) = presentes
put (ringed descender ) = prout
p9 = post (more common than abbreviation 7/ )
11/ Abbreviation of words beginning or including the letter 'q'
q (tilde through descender ) = quod
q(barred , horizontal or sloped )A(supersscript lowercase 'a' ) = quam
q3 = que
q2 = quia
12/ Abbreviation of word ending 'rum'
As arabic numeral 4
eg bono4 = bonorum
anima4 = animarum
sa4 = Sarum
Ebor4 = Ebor(ac)um
13/ Abbbreviation for 'es' and 'is'
Like a number 7 with loop instead of angle
eg nob7 = nobis
reg7 = regis
14/ Ampersands and special signs
& or 7 = ampersands
mathematical division symbol = est
ee ( tilde over both 'ee' ) = esse
15/
In medieval Latin palaeography , the 't' very closely resembles a 'c'.
'u' and 'v' are interchangeable.
Contraction 'ut' stands for 'vel' not 'ut'
